A1C Levels
The A1c level is the best indicator of long-term blood glucose control. Some doctors refer to it as the gold standard. Research studies have indicated you are far less likely to develop any complications from diabetes if you can keep your A1c less than 7%. The following table shows the A1c levels and the average blood glucose they represent:

Hemoglobin A1c (A1c) Average Blood Glucose (Mg/dl)
13% 380
12% 345
11% 310
10% 275
9% 240
8% 205
7% 170
6% 135
5% 100

The Diabetes & Endocrinology Institute offers an A1c during part one of the Diabetes Self-Management Training Class. As part of the follow-up of this class, the A1c is again offered 3 months later, one year later and two years later. These follow-up A1c tests are offered free as part of this self-management program. For more information, contact the Diabetes & Endocrinology Institute at (813) 615-7262.
