Diabetes Nutrition Program
Nutrition is an integral part of diabetes management. Food is processed in the body as protein, fat, and carbohydrate. The carbohydrate turns into glucose in the body. Too often, people who have diabetes only look at the sugar in the food label to determine whether or not they can eat that particular food. In reality, they should look at the total carbohydrate to determine whether or not the food is appropriate to eat.
The Diabetes & Endocrinology Institute offers several classes regarding nutrition:
-
Basics of Nutrition – Discusses the basics of simple carbohydrate counting
-
Advanced Meal Planning – Addresses eating out, creating appropriate meals, changing recipes, and how fat and protein affect the diet
-
Diet and Exercise for the Healthy Heart – For patients who have abnormal lipid levels or cardiac disease
-
Intensive Insulin and Carbohydrate Management – A class that looks at blood sugars and food logs to help determine insulin adjustments based on food intake
-
Medical Nutrition Therapy – Individual consult for more specific needs
If you would like to attend any of these classes, please call (813) 615-7262 to discuss with a registered dietitian which class would be best suited for you.
