This system allows you to move, work, and be active. The spectrum of orthopaedic care includes all ages: infants, young athletes, the elderly, males and females, those who are ill and those who are in good health. Throughout the University Community Health network, you will find that our orthopaedic team is committed to lifting spirits, restoring mobility, and providing excellent care.
Diagnostic testing determines the health of your body’s musculoskeletal system while assessing any damage or disease. Orthopedists have several options available including:
-
Diagnostic X-ray is often the first test ordered by the physician. It provides a picture of different parts of the body and is used for testing and diagnosis.
-
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses computerized processing in conjunction with a magnetic field and radio frequency waves to make non-invasive, detailed three-dimensional images of the spine, joints, and soft tissues. ·
-
Arthroscopes are high-powered devices that allow the orthopedist to look at the inside of a joint to pinpoint and repair damaged tissue.
Trauma and Fractures
Approximately 6.8 million bone fractures occur in the US every year. All forms of treatment for broken bones follow one basic rule: The broken pieces must be put back into position and prevented from moving out of place until they heal. Broken bones heal by “knitting” back together with new bone being formed around the edge of the broken parts. The specific treatment depends on the severity and type of fracture and the specific bone involved. Successful treatment of a fracture depends on the patient’s cooperation. To help a broken bone heal, follow your health team’s advice.
Sports Injuries
Careful diagnosis and comprehensive care of any sport-related injury can help young athletes heal and return to competition with less chance of repeat injury.
