A Child's Comfort
The Pediatric Care Center has taken great strides to provide the most painless and stress-free stay as possible. No painful procedures are done in the patient’s room. A special "Happy Hippo" treatment room was created so children will not associate being scared or feeling pain with their own room.

To ease the fear of shots and blood draws, prior to a needle-stick, an anesthetic called EMLA cream is used on the skin to numb the area. Use of the cream is a standing order for all patients on the unit.

Blood conservation is also practiced by using the I-STAT System, which requires the use of only two to three drops of blood for laboratory tests.

Also, it is not unusual for outside groups such as musicians from Busch Gardens, community groups, special guests from local sports teams, or the Pet Therapy Caravan to be on the floor entertaining the children.

The Pediatric Care Center is divided into two sections—one for infant toddlers and school-age children and the other for adolescents. The children have a playroom and the adolescents have a teen lounge.
