Course Description
This course is aimed at advancing the interdisciplinary understanding of sleep related medical disorders. Information on advanced laboratory techniques will be provided for the sleep technologist, and conferees will discuss updated diagnostic tools for practitioners, addressing pediatric, adolescent, and adult sleep disorders.
Target Audience
Separate clinical and technical tracks will be provided concurrently. The primary focus of the speakers within each track will be to address the individual needs of the attendees to integrate these new concepts into their practices. Individuals will be able to attend sessions from either track as space allows.

Upon completion of this CME activity, the clinician should be able to:

Recognize the advances in pediatric and adult sleep medicine for 2009.

Better identify the implication of medications on sleep and on the polysomnogram.

Improve their ability to recognize and treat pediatric and adult disorders of sleep maintenance and onset, parasomnias, and hypersomnolent disorders.

Analyze the new protocols for scoring and recognizing the abnormalities identifiable on the polysomnogram.
Technologists
Upon completion of this CE activity, the clinician should be able to:

List attributes of both pediatric and adult sleep disorders, including parasomnias and hypersomnolent disorders.

Recognize the potential effect of medications on the patient and the polysomnogram.

Describe and analyze the new scoring system and recognize artifacts and unusual waveform characteristics.

Identify dysrhythmias seen in a sleep center.
-
Describe the protocols for the MSLT and MWT testing procedures.
-
Outline protocols for CPAP / BiLevel / and adaptive pressure support therapy.

Sleep Technologist: The American Association of Sleep Technologists designates this educational activity for a maximum of 14.0 AAST Continuing Education Credits. Individuals should claim only those credits that he/she actually earned in the educational activity.

Respiratory Therapist: This program has been approved for 14 contact hours Continuing Respiratory Care Education (CRCE) credit by the American Association for Respiratory Care, Course #291261000.
Cancellations
The last day cancellation of registration may be made with a partial refund is Monday, August 31. A cancellation fee of $25 will be retained to cover expenses incurred in the registration process. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after August 31.
If University Community Hospital must cancel this activity due to unforeseen circumstances, the full registration fee will be refunded. The hospital will not be responsible for travel expenses incurred by the participant in this case.

The hotel is centrally located in downtown Tampa, adjacent to Channelside Entertainment and Shopping Complex, the St. Pete Times Forum, and the Florida Aquarium. It is just a short streetcar ride to Ybor City, Tampa’s historic Latin district offering exciting nightlife and shopping.

Be sure to mention the UCH Sleep Symposium to reserve one of the limited number of rooms reserved for this symposium at the special rate of $139 per night for single and double occupancy; $159 for triple; and $179 for quad. All rates are plus 12% in taxes and apply three days prior and three days after, based on space and rate availability. Parking is available at $8 per day and $16 overnight.
The "cut-off date" to receive the special room rate is August 6, 2009. After this date, the hotel will determine whether it can continue to offer rooms at these rates.
