Couplet Care
Couplet Care refers to a special kind of nursing care in which new mothers and babies are never separated. They are together from the time of birth until discharge home, unless there is a concern about the health of either mother or baby.
A partner or other family member is encouraged to participate in welcoming the new child into the family.
By allowing the baby to stay in the room, the mom and family have a better opportunity to bond with the new addition to the family. The same nurse will provide care for both mother and baby, being present to answer any questions concerning the care of the newborn.
If you have chosen to breastfeed your baby, this early bonding period also gives the chance to begin breastfeeding right away.
Babies are very alert during the first few hours of life, and are very curious about exploring the sights and sounds of this new world. Families are encouraged to take advantage of this alert period by having their own special private and quiet time together.
All patients at The Women’s Center are offered couplet care, including Cesarean Section patients. We are the premier hospital in the Tampa Bay area to offer this opportunity for our Cesarean Section mothers, in a room specially designed to meet privacy and safety needs. We do recommend that a family member be present during the hospital stay to provide extra safety and bonding with the infant.
Couplet care is available to all expecting mothers at The Women’s Center. Feel free to discuss this option with your Obstetrician at your regular prenatal visit. At the time of your pre-admission, let the registration nurse know you want Couplet Care. It will be noted on your chart that this is how you want to begin early bonding with your new baby.
