Uterine Surgeries
Some common problems of the uterus require scecilized surgery to treat. Examples of these problems are:
-
Polyps or Uterine Fibroids - Usually non-cancerous growths inside the uterus causing heavy bleeding, pain or urinary problems.
-
Excessive Uterine Bleeding - As women age, hormonal imbalances might occur causing the lining of the uterus to thicken and excessive bleeding to occur.
-
Adhesions - Tissue in the uterus may form adhesions causing infertility or change to menstrual flow.
-
Repeated Miscarriages/Infertility-if pregnancy cannot be achieved or a loss of pregnancy happens repeatedly, a hysteroscopy can help to diagnose the problem.
-
Displaced IUD - If an intrauterine device (IUD) moves out of its proper placement, a hysteroscopy may be used to locate and remove it if embedded in the uterine wall.
Common uterine surgeries perfomed at The Women's Center at University Community Hospital includes:
-
Dilation and Curettage (D and C) - A procedure to scrape and remove tissue from the uterus used to diagnose and treat abnormal bleeding, remove uterine polyps and remove tissue remaining in the uterus after a miscarriage. The physician will stretch (dilate) the cervix and then uses a curette (a device used to scrape the tissue of the uterus). Often, the tissue will be sent to the lab to make sure no cancer is detected.
-
Hysteroscopy - A way to look directly inside the uterus. A thin telescope-like instrument is placed inside the uterus and can be used to diagnose or treat problems in the uterus by inserting other instruments. This procedure can be done at the same time as a D and C or as a separate procedure.
-
Endometrial Ablation - A process where the lining of the uterus is removed or destroyed to treat excessive uterine bleeding. It can be done using electric current or laser and can only be used if a woman no longer desires to have children.
