What is Morbid Obesity?

The term "morbid" means medical problem. Those with morbid obesity have medical problems that are either due to or made worse by their weight. The typical medical problems associated with morbid obesity include:

  • Hypertension
  • Abnormal Menses
  • Diabetes
  • Urinary Stress Incontinence
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Infertility
  • High Cholesterol
  • Liver Disease
  • Heart Disease
  • Arthritis

Those with morbid obesity also have a significant decrease in life span. The morbidity associated with obesity tends to begin when an individual reaches a BMI (body mass index) of 35.
